Our Mission The Brazilian Michigan Cultural Center (BMCC) is dedicated to promoting Brazilian culture through Capoeira, creating a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for children, families, and adults. Our goal is to develop not only physical skills, but also character, discipline, and a strong sense of community.
Code of Conduct
1. Respect is the Foundation
All members are expected to treat students, instructors, families and all visitors with respect at all times. Discrimination, bullying, or any form of disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated within the community. We are committed to honoring and respecting diversity in all its forms, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.
2. Discipline and Commitment
Students are expected to arrive on time and prepared for training, showing respect for the class structure and everyone involved. Instructions from teachers should be followed with focus, humility, and respect. A positive attitude and consistent effort are essential, as progress in Capoeira comes through discipline, patience, and ongoing commitment.
3. Open and Respectful Communication
We encourage open, honest, and respectful communication at all times. Concerns or conflicts should be addressed directly with the appropriate person in a calm and constructive way. Healthy communication is essential for growth and helps us resolve issues in a positive manner. If a concern cannot be resolved directly, or if an individual does not feel comfortable addressing it on their own, they are encouraged to bring the matter to the appropriate Mestre, instructor, or monitor listed in this document for support and guidance. Gossip, negativity, or behavior that undermines others is discouraged, as it can harm trust and the unity of our community.
4. Safe Training Environment
Safety is a shared responsibility and a top priority in all activities. Students are expected to maintain awareness and control during training, ensuring that all physical interaction remains appropriate to the context of Capoeira practice. Any aggressive or inappropriate contact outside of training is not permitted. Everyone must respect personal boundaries, both their own and those of others, to help maintain a safe and supportive environment for all.
5. Parent/Guardian Responsibility (Youth Programs)
Parents and guardians are an important part of the student’s development in Capoeira. We ask that students arrive on time, prepared, and ready to participate fully in class. Families are encouraged to support the values of respect, discipline, and consistency taught in the academy. Open communication with instructors and staff is welcomed and helps ensure the best experience and progress for each child.
6. Representing the Community
Every student represents BMCC not only during training, but also at events, performances, and in digital spaces such as social media. We expect behavior that reflects respect, responsibility, and the values of our community. Being part of BMCC means carrying yourself in a way that honors the art of Capoeira, the people within it, and the culture it represents.
7. Community Rules
● Uniform must be worn
● Always ensure that your uniform is washed
● Use deodorant before class
● Ensure toenails are clipped and short
● Please no jeans, shorts, or crop tops
● Long hair must be tied up
● No street shoes
● Respect the space and those using it
● Always ask permission from the Mestres or Graduado students before using/playing any of the instruments
● Train more, talk less
● Warm up your body before class

Community Adviser — Andreia
Andreia will serve as a Community Adviser, offering guidance and counsel based on her experience and long-standing involvement as a senior member of our community.
Reports must be submitted through our official email to ensure proper documentation, confidentiality, and appropriate handling of each situation. All reports will be treated with care and discretion to help maintain the safety, respect, and well-being of everyone involved, as well as a positive and welcoming training environment for our community.

9. Accountability and Consequences
All members play an important role in upholding this Code of Conduct and contributing to a respectful, safe, and supportive community. When challenges arise, we approach them with fairness, understanding, and a focus on learning and growth. Depending on the situation, this may include supportive guidance, a formal conversation, temporary pause from activities, or, in more serious cases, removal from the program. Any necessary actions will be communicated with care to those involved, and if removal from the program occurs, the community will be informed in a respectful and appropriate manner. Our priority is always to foster understanding, accountability, and positive development, using each situation as an opportunity to strengthen both the individual and the community.
10. Honoring Capoeira Culture
Capoeira is more than movement; it is a living cultural tradition that integrates history, music, rhythm, philosophy, and community. It is through this full expression, not only physical technique, that the art is preserved and passed on. Students are therefore encouraged to engage beyond the physical practice and actively participate in music, singing, instrument learning, and cultural study, as these elements are essential to understanding and respecting Capoeira in its entirety. Participation in the roda requires attentiveness, respect, and awareness of others. The roda is a shared space of learning and expression where discipline, humility, and connection are demonstrated at all times. Students are expected to honor the energy of the roda by showing respect to the music, the game, the instructors, and all participants, whether playing, singing, or observing. This respect helps preserve the integrity of the tradition and ensures a safe, inclusive, and meaningful experience for everyone involved.
11. Our Commitment
BMCC is committed to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all. We teach and guide with integrity, respect, and professionalism in every aspect of our practice. Our goal is to support each student’s personal growth, discipline, and cultural connection through Capoeira, helping them develop both inside and outside the academy.
12. Brazilian Michigan Cultural Center (BMCC) Statement of Conduct in our Enrollment Agreement
All families participating in the Brazilian Michigan Cultural Center (BMCC) are expected to follow the guidelines, policies, and procedures outlined in our publications, including the waiver, as well as any future updates. We encourage all families to stay informed, as these guidelines help us maintain a safe, respectful, and positive environment for everyone. At BMCC, we value cooperation, respect, and a strong sense of community. In situations where behavior does not align with these expectations, we will work with families to address concerns in a constructive and supportive way. However, BMCC reserves the right to take appropriate action when necessary to protect the well-being of our community. This may include disciplinary action, temporary suspension, or termination of enrollment if a child or family member engages in behavior that is disruptive, unsafe, does not meet community
expectations, does not follow reasonable requests from staff, or does not fulfill financial responsibilities. Decisions will always be made with the safety of our students, families, and staff, as well as the integrity of our programs, in mind. If a child/Adult is withdrawn or removed from the program due to conduct-related concerns, tuition and fees will not be refunded.
